NEER1282 - Dutch II

[A. • 30 Th. • 5 ECTS - credits]

Lecturer : Boutsen Isolde
Language of instruction : French
Learning outcomes : At the end of the course, the student should have a good passive understanding of the themes discussed in class, and he/she should be able to use this knowledge actively in a personal work.
He/She should manage to handle with grammatical structures that are more difficult than in the first year, providing that he/she has a good knowledge of this prerequisite. The practical work hours should help him/her to overcome his/her fear to speak in a foreign language in front of a public.
Prerequisites : The prerequisites for the first year are still available for the second year, as well as the assimilation of the first year's course.
Course contents : The course is essentially composed of 5 to 6 files including:
- an introduction in the form of a structured semantic field;
- texts from the Dutch press;
- authentic documents;
- a questionnaire aiming at assuring a synthesis of the studied texts;
- grammatical and lexical exercises;
- an overall revision of the treated file;
These files differ from year to year (partially or totally), as they are based on, among others, political, social and socio-economic news.
Some examples of studied themes:
- politics in Belgium and in the US;
- prevention campaign in the society;
- privacy at work;
- violence and insecurity;
- media;
- our environment;
- studies and labour market;
- means of communication.

The presentation of the files alternates with the development of useful points such as the abbreviations, the spelling, the connectors, basic idiomatic expressions, economic, social and political vocabulary, etc.
Mode of delivery : The division of the audience in small groups is absolutely necessary for the participative structure of the course. The direct involvement of the students is indispensable for the proper functioning of the course. As the course changes each year, there is no syllabus but loose sheets of paper are handed out in class. Students pay a contribution to the reprography for the documents they get. Homework is limited to approximately four hours per month.
The practical work hours are not totally correlated to the course. They aim to develop oral expression on the one hand and the student's autonomy on the other hand. The students will have to choose a text about current economic, social or political subjects, and then to present it to their class and discuss it supervised by their teacher. Besides, the vocabulary learned in the first year will be activated and expanded during this exercise sessions.
Assessment methods and criteria : Summative assessment : the written exam assesses the knowledge of the subject matters as well as the assimilation of the production mechanisms. It is divided in three parts :
- knowledge of the files and of the lexical components;
- grammatical production;
- essay on one of the subjects studied in class.

Assessment of the practical work : the mark is mainly defined by the individual performance of the students, of their presence, of their active participation in the discussions and in the exercises introduced by the teachers.

Lecture and practical work account for 5 ECTS.
