NEER1181 - Dutch I

[A. • 30 Th. • 3 ECTS - credits]

Lecturers : De Munter Astrid, Boutsen Isolde
Language of instruction : Dutch
Learning outcomes : This course aims to bring all the students to the same general level.
The students who already have an advanced level, who took the assessment test and received a grade of at least 14/20 are exempted from the Dutch I course.
The students should master the vocabulary of the socio-economic fields studied in class relating to job applications, the bank, post office, telephone, traffic, business organisation, office equipment, weather, etc.
They should have revised and deepened the fundamental morphology of the language.
The students who have made a real personal effort during the year should have acquired language automatisms, which will enable them to use what they have studied in class in everyday life.

Prerequisites : The teachers have prepared a syllabus that includes all the prerequisites that allow the students to successfully follow the course:
- Sleutel voor het Nederlands 1: fundamental grammar (theory- exercises - solutions);
- Sleutel voor het Nederlands 2: vocabulary relating to social and thematic communication.
Course contents : As the programme only allows for one hour a week, the course aims to consolidate and broaden the grammatical and semantic knowledge.

The course is divided in different sections in order to alternate between:
- themes of socio-economic life: vocabulary extensions, targeted exercises;
- grammar: points of morphology studied synthetically and integration of new points (such as the double infinitive, pronominal adverb, inversion, notions of spelling);
- listening comprehension in language laboratory: text accompanied by a synthesis questionnaire, content and vocabulary comprehension exercises.
Mode of delivery : A. All the groups are composed of maximum 25 students in order to maintain interactivity. The continuous involvement of the students is essential to achieve the goals set out above.
B. The students are required to acquire the syllabus of prerequisites as well as the reading portfolio.
This reading file constitutes the personal work of the students, they should reach a sufficient level of understanding to decipher it as a whole and be able to answer synthesis questions.
During the course additional individual pages of thematic and grammatical extensions will be handed out and discussed in an interactive way. The payment of these additional pages is included in the cost of the syllabus.
C. Language laboratory: the students will be confronted with an unknown text they have to decipher at their own pace, with the help of a questionnaire relating to the content and the vocabulary.
D. Tests of prerequisites: summarising tests of 15 minutes, marked by the teachers to enable the students to better situate themselves in relation to the required level.
Assessment methods and criteria : Formative assessment:

- individual information sheet that includes the academic background of the student in Dutch;

- Ongoing evaluation through the interactivity underpinning the course;

- summarising tests on prerequisite elements.

Final assessment:

Written examination that assesses the knowledge of the subject matter as well as the assimilation of production mechanisms.
It is divided into three parts:
- knowledge of the studied themes, of the vocabulary, and of the reading file;
- grammatical production;
- essay on a theme studied in class: the students can choose a topic between three proposed subjects.
