HDPO1314 - Public space, knowledge and media

[2 Q. • 30 Th. • 3 ECTS - credits]

Lecturer : Colson Vinciane
Language of instruction : French
Learning outcomes : This course aims to analyse the different relations that constitute the public space, between the fields of knowledge, media and politics. At a time when the European Commission promotes the knowledge society, more and more significant interdependencies between science, media, economy and politics will be decrypted. We will aim to understand the specific dynamics that govern these relationships, by using several key concepts of media sociology, while at the same time opening the door to sociology of sciences and politics.
Prerequisites :
Course contents : - Definition of the concept of public space: the Habermas idea will be explained, but also criticised and put into perspective. The concepts of “knowledge society” and “governance” notably are forcing us today to redefine this public space. In this first introductive section, several theories on the relationship between media and politics will also be presented and compared.
- The course will then focus on the more specific relations between media, science and public space. Through the history of science, sociology of science and the media, as well as some elements of philosophy, we try to analyse the evolution of interdependencies between these three fields.
- The researcher's work evolves, whether in its everyday practice or in its relations with the media and the audience(s). What impact does it have on knowledge? The role played by the expert in the media field will be particularly analysed.
Mode of delivery : - Ex cathedra presentations, accompanied by readings of texts, discussed and analysed in class.
- Highlighting of concepts through the analysis of audiovisual or written media documents.
- Active student participation is expected.
Assessment methods and criteria : Written examination on factual knowledge of the subject material as well as the ability to synthesise the texts discussed in class and to make connections between different parts of the course.
