ECGE1321 - Organizational studies

[1 Q. • 30 Th. • 3 ECTS - credits]

Lecturer : Nils Frédéric
Language of instruction : French
Learning outcomes : The growing influence of organisations on our professional and private life is a fundamental characteristic of contemporary societies. The understanding of behaviours (individual and collective) within these organised human groups is therefore a major challenge and an area of research that can't be overlooked within human sciences studies. Hence the first objective of the course: understand the behaviour that may sometimes seem irrational at first sight, of individuals within organisations. To reach this objective, we will study several theories that will enlighten and attempt to solve the problem of understanding individual and collective behaviour in organised ensembles. In doing so, we will also go more thoroughly into different currents, that, based on a particular representation of the human, have generated conceptual frameworks allowing the analysis of the organisation's functioning. So, the second objective of this course is the familiarisation with these currents.
Prerequisites : Fundamental knowledge of psychology and sociology.
Course contents : Besides a brief introduction, this course includes three main parts. The first part focuses on the two classical approaches of human behaviour: the psychodynamic approach and the behavioural approach. The second part focuses on some concepts from social and systemic psychology, in order to refine our understanding of individual behaviour in group and in interaction. The third part, that studies the different theories of the organisations' functioning, is divided into five chapters. The first chapter recounts a historical review of the evolution of the organisations' theories. Chapters two to five consist of a more systematic presentation of four of these theoretical currents: the rationalist, the organicistic, the culturalist and the strategic currents.
Mode of delivery : Lecture illustrated by case studies.
Assessment methods and criteria : Written examination on the whole course.
