COMU1210 - Analysis of the theories of information and communication

Learning outcomes : 1. Familiarise the students with the main theories of communication, their original scientific context, their contributions and limitations in the study of communication phenomena and devices.

2. Contextualize the major theories of communication in relation to each other and also in regards to other disciplines in human and social sciences (linguistics, psychology, sociology, anthropology).

3. Articulate the main theories of communication in a rational synthesis.

4. Sharpen the students' critical detachment ability with regard to communication phenomena and devices in our society.
Prerequisites : The course continues to explore communication theories in the continuity of the “information and communication” course. It is however not mandatory to have followed this course, as the student can refer to the book that serves as course material for both courses.
Course contents : The following chapters of the book “La communication” will be addressed during the sessions (with developments that are no included in the book):
- Reminder: the mechanistic and organist approaches to communication;
- The functionalist theories of mass communication: supplements (not included in the book) on the selection of news items and the source-journalist relationship
- Reception studies;
- Essential novelties;
- Anthropology of communication;
- Sociology of uses of information and communication technologies.
Mode of delivery : - Ex cathedra lecture;
- Audiovisual illustrations;
- Awareness or application exercises.
Assessment methods and criteria : Written examination on:
• Factual knowledge of the course material
• Ability to synthesise course material, to link different parts of the course
• Capacity to transpose to a different subject, theories and concepts studied in class
