ANGL1292 - English II

[A. • 60 Th. • 5 ECTS - credits]

Lecturer : Callut Jean-Paul
Language of instruction : English.
Learning outcomes : a. The aims of the course:

- The knowledge acquired during the first year course (English I) will be developed and completed by information intended to develop the student's reflection field, especially in relation to news topics as well as cultural differences (cross-cultural differences, US election, bio fuels, company presentation, sweatshops…).
This knowledge serves as a support to the development of the student's linguistic competence;
- At the end of the course, the student should have increased his vocabulary by around 500 words and economic/general expressions, remembered according to their frequency of use.
Some essential notions of advanced grammar (use of the tenses, indirect style, auxiliaries) should also be mastered;
- In regards to the know-how, i.e. the use of “knowledge” and “linguistic competence” in context to develop the student's communicative competence, we will attach high importance to listening comprehension and oral expression;
- Concerning the abilities, i.e. more general mental operations and thought mechanisms involved in the intellectual development of the student, the focus will remain, with a higher threshold of requirements, on:
- memory;
- analytical mind (extract the essential);
- method (conduct a research, know how to use documents, be able to present a work clearly).

To these, are added:

- reasoning (organise ideas);
- critical thinking (justify a position).

b. The course level

The aims of the course are pursued at a “B2” performance level.

- Concerning the communicative competence, we define the level according to listening comprehension and oral expression:
* Listening comprehension:
The students should be able to understand complex messages or instructions given by a speaker who adapts his/her speech.

- Oral expression:
* Communication of ideas:
The students should be able to communicate clearly their ideas using more complex sentences; the content of the message should be totally intelligible.

* Dialogue:
The students should be able to establish and sustain a nuanced dialogue with a speaker who adapts his/her speech.
Prerequisites : The aims of the English I course.
Course contents : Information and acquisition of the vocabulary and expressions linked to the following themes:

- Cross-cultural differences;
- Body language and presentations;
- The US elections;
- Bio fuels;
- Baby boomers;
- Company presentation;
- Looking for a job;
- Language of meetings;
- Sweatshops: Primark;
- Offshoring;
- ...

In addition, the students must choose themselves, the themes for the debates and for their personal press file completed throughout the whole year.

The advanced grammar points - the use of the verb, “modals and semi-auxiliaries” and the indirect style - will be mastered through oral and written exercises during the lessons and through self-learning.
Mode of delivery : Interactive communicative lessons.
The didactic supports are made of files handed out to the students, that include texts, exercises and vocabulary.
Assessment methods and criteria : a) Oral expression (12 points): continuous evaluation with exemption. Participation is compulsory!
- Debates
- Press file

b) Written examination (8 points): two written tests covering:
- Advanced grammar;
- Specialised vocabulary through self-learning;
- Informative content studied in class.

Participation:

Attendance to the interactive courses is compulsory.
Only 3 unjustified absences are allowed throughout the year. However, if the student is absent for one of the tests, his/her mark will be 0/20 for this test.
Beyond these three absences, every additional absence will have to be justified and explained by a medical certificate or a written excuse duly-substantiated. In the case of an absence justified by a medical certificate, the student is excused from any test carried out that day.
Beyond 3 absences, the student will not be exemptible anymore (except if he/she has a legitimate reason).
In addition, each unexcused absence beyond 2 will be compensated by an additional article in the student's press file.

If the student is absent 10 times or more during the whole year without any legitimate reason, his final mark will automatically be 0/20.
If a student is absent more then 20 times, we consider he/she has given up his/her studies.
Recommended or required reading : - Files for the interactive communicative lessons (handed out in class);
- French-English dictionary (preferably Robert and Collins).
