ROMA1114 - General Linguistics

Learning outcomes :
The course aims to provide the students with a general overview of linguistics by familiarising them with the main questions it tackles and the instrumental concepts it deploys.

Course contents :
The course is in 4 parts.

(1) After defining linguistics and reviewing its fields of application, the course examines the questions of the origin, history and change in language, with a particular focus on Indo-European languages.

(2) The course systematically analyses all the components of language phonetics & phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

(3) An overview of modern linguistic theories (structuralism, generativism, cognitivism and functionalism are examined).

(4) A selection of related disciplines such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, natural language processing, or the learning of foreign languages, are examined as case studies illustrative of the applications of analytical linguistics.
