Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, the student should have a good knowledge of the historical and political events and socio-cultural changes that have conditioned the emergence of French, its diffusion, its place in the society and its evolution.
It should also be able to represent linguistic "landscape"of the great works of different periods of literary history.

Course contents :
The course traces the “external” history of the French language from its birth on the Gallo-Roman territory up to its current diversification within the French-speaking world.
To better understand the French's current functioning, role and status in France and in the French-speaking world - particularly in Belgium, it is necessary to analyse the political events and the socio-cultural changes which conditioned the emergence of French, its accession to writing, its transition to a national and international language. The specific characteristics of this history will be highlighted with regard to those of the history of other great languages of culture such as Spanish, Italian, English or German.
