Learning outcomes :
The aim is to initiate the students to the daily techniques of the historians' work, by giving them also the possibility to use their historical criticism and encyclopaedia of history knowledge. The different aspects of scientific research in history (questionnaire, bibliographic research, critical treatment of works and of an original source, writing and argumentation) are thus taken into account. The end of year work is the opportunity for students to demonstrate their acquisition and integration of knowledge and know-how: it is their first “masterpiece” in preparation of the seminar works and the master's thesis.

Course contents :
Once the students have acquired the fundamental techniques, this course continues the “Initiation to historical research I” course for the students enrolled in the "Arts subjects, societies, civilisation" programme, by the examination of a specific question discussed in class and then analysed through personal works.

It is often the critical analysis of a myth, a collective representation or an essay of popularisation regarding the reality of the past as far as the historian can reconstruct it. For instance: Jeanne d'Arc in theatre and cinema (we want to assess the relevance of a contemporary representation in regards to the facts studied by means of published sources and works achieved by historians).
