Learning outcomes :
Students are expected to master the basic concepts of literary analysis in English, apply them in relation to the various texts of the course syllabus and report their findings in short essays.

From the analysis of significative short stories in English, the course aims to introduce students to major authors and literary movements from the end of the 19th century to the present. Students are expected to master the basic English literary terminology and apply it the texts being studied. They will be initiated to academic writing in English and expected also to develop a coherent and correctly formulated argumentation.

Course contents :
The course is devoted to the literary analysis of a selection of modern short stories from representative authors of the main literatures in English. The course sets out from an introduction of the key concepts of literary analysis and a history of the British and American short story. Each subsequent class (2h/week) is devoted to the commented analysis of one of the selected works accompanied by a brief presentation of their authors. An mock exam essay is organized towards the middle of the course as practice for the written examination.

Le cours est consacré à l'analyse d'une dizaine de nouvelles d'auteurs représentatifs des principales littératures anglophones. Le cours s'ouvre par une introduction aux concepts clés de l'analyse du récit et d'une rétrospective de la nouvelle britannique et américaine. Chaque période de cours (2h/semaine) est ensuite consacrée à l'analyse commentée de chacune des œuvres choisies assortie d'une brève présentation de leurs auteurs. Un exercice de rédaction effectué à mi-cours prépare aux questions ouvertes de l'examen écrit.

The course reader includes the selected texts accompanied by a glossary and notes.
The course is taught with powerpoint supports.


Assessment methods and criteria :
Students are graded on the basis of a written examination (consisting of questions testing their knowledge of the authors and artistic movements studied and their critical understanding of the texts themselves.
