Objectifs d'apprentissage :
The aim of this course is gaining understanding in contemporary management and strategy theories and understanding the organizing and functioning of organizations. This course is about management and managers. Managers are the one thing that all organization, no matter the size - need. There is no doubt that the world managers face today has changed.  New challenges and management theories see the light.  However, this does not mean that classic management and strategy  theories do not matter anymore.  This course offers both classic and modern management  and strategy theories that managers can use today.
Upon completion of this course, the student is able to:
• Define and compare key concepts, aspects and theories (schools of thought) on management and strategy.
• Interpret and analyze the complexity and challenges managing an organization (or part of it).
• Explain the complexity of the determination- and implementation of a strategy.
• Effectively apply the relevant models and approaches within the domain of management and strategy.

Contenu de l'activité :
The "General Management " part consists of the following topics:
1. What is management - what is entrepreneurship? - Why does management matter? - Roles of managers
2. The evolution of management thinking: Interesting management lessons from the past vs. current trends in management
3. Management and the environment: External environment, Corporate culture and Managing in a global environment
4. Ethics, Corporate social responsibility and Sustainable Development
5. Corporate governance
6. Managerial decision making: Managers are bounded rational
7. Organizational design: elements of organizing, Mintzberg's classification
8. Managing change and innovation
9. Leadership and management
10. Power and Politics
The "Corporate Strategy"  part includes the following topics:
   1. History of strategic management, definition of strategy
   2. Mission and vision
   3. Industry analysis (IO view: Porter five forces framework)
   4. Extensions of industry analysis:  competitor analysis, segmentation and strategic group analysis
   5. Resources and competences (RBV)
   6. Creating a competitive advantage
   7. Sustaining competitive advantage
   8. International strategy
   9. Current trends in Strategy
These issues are all systematically conversed using a textbook and are supplemented with cases, exercises and background materials such as academic texts. During class, examples and cases are frequently debated. Furthermore an assignment is given related to management  and strategy implementation.

        Written exam - CLOSED book (counts for 80 % of global score)

       Written assignment in group  of 4-5 persons( counts for 20 % of global score).
       + Students are solely reponsible for teaming up.  one score of the assignement apllies to all group team members.
 
Important: the evaluation is equally split 50 - 50 over the General Management part and the Corporate Strategy part.

Written exam - CLOSED book (counts for 80 % of global score)

 Written assignment (counts for 20 % of global score).
The score of the assignment part can be kept (automatically) except when the student requests in written (paper) AND  by mail to teacher  before July 12 a new individual assignment which will be evaluated (20 % of global score)
