HDPO1321 - Law, Governance and Sustainable development

Learning outcomes :
The aim of the course is to analyse how the "sustainable development" has made its way into the different tools of public policy, in a descriptive perspective but also in a reflective and critical way, fueled by current issues and taking as a start the legal dimension.

This course aims to provide the students with:

- a knowledge of the main tools used by the law to ensure that values such as environment protection, health protection and social dimension are taken seriously, when facing conflicts of interests.
- the ability to understand which are the relevant authorities to organise the protection of these values, in a landscape involving many actors;
- a critical eye towards the range of available instruments, whether binding or not binding;
- insights into the relation between science and law.

Course contents :
The course shall be focused, in 2015-2016, on the following issues ;
- Climate change and the Paris Summit of Decembre 2015 ;
- The relation between sustainable development and international trade, under the light of the current transatlantic negotiations ;
- Biodiversity protection.


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lecture. The course will be participative: students are invited to work on case studies related to the news.
Students are also asked to read texts before class (information announced during the previous course and via the website e-saintlouis).

Written examination.
