Learning outcomes : This course aims to provide the students with a thorough understanding of the political and social structures and processes that determine how a society is organised and governed, how the social goals are reached. Many phenomena and events in the political field and in decisions making can only be understood in their social structure and considering the values and norms of the society. The students will be provided with fundamental concepts and familiarised with theories. They should develop their own method of analysis to enable them to approach social issues with a discerning mind.
Prerequisites : No specific prerequisite.
Course contents : What is (Political) Sociology?
The global context;
Globalisation;
Ideology;
Power;
Politics, government and terrorism (Geddes);
U.S. election.
Mode of delivery : The lecture is illustrated by PowerPoint presentations.
Assessment methods and criteria : The assessment is an oral examination with preparation time. It is possible to replace a part of the examination by a personal piece of work.
Recommended or required reading : 1. Texts handed out by the professor;
2. Antony Geddes, Sociology, 5th edition Polity Press, Cambridge, 2005.
