ROMA1213 - Comparative Literatures II

[A. • 30 Th. • 3 ECTS - credits]

Lecturer : Ost Isabelle
Language of instruction : French
Learning outcomes : At the end of the course, students should have acquired the essential knowledge regarding the literary movements, periods, genres, works, etc. throughout Europe from Antiquity until the 20th century; moreover, they will have to demonstrate their summarising and analytical skills - both of which are indispensable in comparative literature - and be able to establish relationship between these works and these major literary movements.
Prerequisites : Minimal knowledge in history and literature
Course contents : After an introduction relating to comparative literature as a discipline, the course carries on with a historical journey through European literature and is divided into two parts, spread over the two years (Comparative Literatures I and II): the first starts with the Jewish, Christian and Antique heritages and extends until the threshold of the Baroque movement; the second starts with Classicism and continues through to the 20th century, with a possible extension to include contemporary literatures outside of Europe.
Mode of delivery : The course is taught by the lecturer. Nevertheless, the students are invited to take an active part in the course through the regular and preparatory reading of works and excerpts commented during the class sessions (texts included in the reading list or acquired by the students). It is essential that students read the major works studied and diversify their reading material as much as possible.
Assessment methods and criteria : Oral examination with, among other topics, a question on the students' readings.
Recommended or required reading : A bibliography listing the major works cited during the course as well as the general works is included in the reading portfolio.
Other information : Portfolio of readings and detailed course outline; anthology of European literary heritage.
