| Learning outcomes :

This course aims to enable the students to acquire the fundamental knowledge of the Greek language (writing, morphology, syntax, vocabulary) as well as the necessary approach for the understanding and translation of texts. At the end of the course, the students should be able to understand and translate texts of medium difficulty.

| Prerequisites :
|
|
As this course is designed for beginners, there are no prerequisites. However, the practice of ancient Greek requires a good mastery of fundamental syntactic analysis.
|
|
|
|
| Course contents :
|
|
This course is a methodical and structured summary of the bases of morphology and syntax of classical Greek. It is based on declension and conjugation exercises as well as on translation exercises that are always directly related to the studied grammatical subjects.
The course proposes a progressive assimilation of a basic vocabulary of about 650 words. It will focus on the implementation of an appropriate approach to translation, which may be applied to any unknown Greek excerpt and shows an appropriate use of tools such as a dictionary and a grammar.
All the studied texts are authentic. This way, the student is immediately confronted with the realities of the Greek language. |

| Mode of delivery :
|
|
The course alternates between lecture and student participation, leaving much room for interactivity. The theoretical notions are explained by the professor through the lecture based on the written support provided to the students. Students' participation is constantly required: supervised exercises in class; homework for the following course; possibility to ask questions relating to the lecture; possibility to ask, at the beginning of each session, clarifications on the previous sessions; regular revision of the studied notions through texts and exercises.

Modalities of the formative assessment:
The weekly exercises in class and at home should enable the students to assess their progress.
Modalities of the summative assessment:
Written examination including morphology, syntax and vocabulary exercises, as well as the translation of a short text that has not been studied in class (medium level text with annotations).
