Lecturer : Brisart Robert
Language of instruction : French
Learning outcomes : The course aims to introduce the students to the fundamental issues of philosophy understood as general theory of science or epistemology.
Prerequisites : No prerequisite. However, if the students want to be introduced to the subject matter, they can read the following work: A. Chalmers, Qu'est-ce que la science ? Paris, La découverte, 1990.
Course contents : Starting from the problem of defining philosophy, the course opts for its status of general theory of scientific knowledge. We study ancient and modern sources before turning to empiricism and neo-positivism. We will analyse its fundamental ideas before studying the reasons of its review starting from the linguistic turn initiated by contemporary analytical philosophy. Against the resulting relativism, the course calls into question the merits of a return to realism and attempts to argue in favour of an idealistic position in theory of science.
Mode of delivery : Lecture.
Assessment methods and criteria : The assessment is a written examination. It assesses the degree of internalisation (comprehension) and assimilation (knowledge) of the material.
Recommended or required reading : cfr. 10
Other information : Students have at their disposal a syllabus that includes a bibliography.
