DRHO2134 - Bioethics and Human Rights

[2 Q. • 30 Th. • 4 ECTS - credits]

Lecturer : Delfosse Marie-Luce
Language of instruction : French
Learning outcomes : To determine and analyse the philosophical issues and the practical implications of references to human rights in bioethics.
Prerequisites : None
Course contents : The evolution of medical knowledge and practices raises many questions. Bioethics and biolaw aim to answer these questions, both in the form of texts (declarations, charters, laws, reflections) and institutional dynamics (the establishment of committees at all levels: international, European, national, regional, local). Reference to human rights are omnipresent in this vast intellectual and institutional movement. In order to have a better grasp of the somewhat enigmatic concept of bioethics, the course initially shows the context in which this concept emerges and takes form. It then places emphasis on considering the theoretical and practical issues of the ethical principles to which bioethics resort (autonomy, dignity, integrity, vulnerability, etc.) and shows the links with human rights. The approach involving the consideration of specific problems illustrates and prolongs this reflection: testing of medicinal products, human cloning, euthanasia, etc.
Mode of delivery : Lectures with ample time set aside for discussion; occasional projections of videos (1 or 2) also followed by discussions.
Assessment methods and criteria : Assignments: a written assignment (8-10 pages) on a bioethics question chosen by the student according to his/her interests (precise details given during the course)

Examination: oral presentation of the written assignment (precise details given during the course)
