Learning outcomes :
The aim of this course is to introduce students to an approach that will lead them to go beyond a purely systematic approach to law so as to reconstruct a chronological perspective. By the end of the course, students should be capable of situating a legal norm (eg. an article of the Civil Code) in its historical evolution.

Course contents :
This course traces the history of private law from the end of the Roman Empire to the present day and is composed of two parts: - Introduction to the external history (sources of law) of private law, focused on the notion of the creation of the rule of law and its subsequent interpretation by the judge; - Internal History, limited, because of the time allotted to the course, to the field of ownership and goods.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course is taught as a series of lectures. A detailed summary and a bibliography are handed out to students during the course. Upon request, it is possible to organise question-answer sessions.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The examination is designed to result in an assessment on three levels: knowledge, comprehension and capacity to apply the subject matter.
