Learning outcomes :
This course presents, as its name indicates, the fundamental notions of accounting, i.e. the basis of this technique. It is designed for students who have never studied this subject matter (see prerequisites). By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- understand accounting as a basic instrument of business management;
- “read” a balance sheet and an income statement;
- understand words such as: profit, stock, amortisation, turnover, provision, etc.

The aim is thus not to form accountants but users of accounting and annual financial statements. This skill will immediately be put to use in the second semester in the “Analysis of financial states” course.

Prerequisites :
None

Co-requisites :
None

Course contents :
The course is divided into two main parts: a general presentation of the system of accounting records and an analysis of companies' different balance sheet items and income statements.

I. General operating of accounting;
II. Study of balance sheet items.
For each item, a general explanation will be provided, followed by an analysis of the evaluation methods and the specific accounting operations related to the concerned item. The lecture refers to Belgian legislation but may also briefly mention other accounting methods.

We will generally study current operations of trading companies. Analytical accounting will be studied later in a master's course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course focuses, especially in the beginning, on the explanation of the technique of double entry bookkeeping through many examples. As this field is new for nearly all students, practical applications should enable them to grasp the basis of the system in order to understand the analysis covered in the second part of the course. In this second part, theoretical explanation will always be accompanied by concrete illustrations.

During the exercise sessions, the students will have to apply the different notions studied in class in exercises based on the establishment of a SME that will be developed during the course of the whole semester.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The final assessment is a written examination composed mainly of practical questions and exercises.
