Key learning outcomes

I. Acquire practical expertise in a broad range of fields relevant to Romance Languages and Literatures, including in an interdisciplinary perspective.

At the end of the Programme students will have acquired:

• In-depth general and inter-disciplinary expertise by reaching out to other disciplines and understanding the connections between them.

Students will acquire:

  • The fundamental knowledge and skills they need in different human and social sciences (principal theories, vocabulary, methods, objectives, stakes and challenges).
  • The ability to construct an interdisciplinary dialogue between the different human and social sciences and to understand their relationship with French and Romance Languages and Literatures on a theoretical level.

All general courses: Ex : Philosophie générale (Bloc 1); Histoire générale de l'art I et II (Bloc 1 and 2); Droit et littérature (Bloc 3)

  • In-depth knowledge in another discipline through the choice of a minor.

• A grounding in Europe’s main authors and literary movements and in the theoretical tools used in literature.

Students will acquire:

  • In-depth knowledge of the history of the principal European literatures and the basics of comparative literature:

  • A command of the principal theoretical tools of literary analysis and the importance and limits of its main schools of thought.

II. To acquire specialist practical knowledge and skills

At the end of the Programme students will have acquired:

• An in-depth introduction to French and Belgian literary history

Students will:

  • Discover the movements, authors and major works of the history of French literature and learn to situate them in their historical context and socio-cultural environment and be able to retrace the history of literary genres:

  • Discover the movements, authors and major works of the history of Belgian francophone literature:

  • Learn the practice of literary history, its methods, objectives, stakes and challenges:

Histoire de la littérature française I et II (Bloc 1 et 2); Théories de la littérature II (Bloc 3); Séminaire de littérature française moderne et contemporaine (Bloc 3)

• A grounding in the use of the principal techniques for literature analysis and critique

Students will:

  • Learn how to analyse and comment on a piece of French-language literature in the context of the author’s entire œuvre and the context in which it was produced.

  • Gain a wide range of practical knowledge and skills for the analysis of French language literature (poetry, novels, drama, etc.), covering the oldest to the latest work, esplore the importance of a personal interpretation; be capable of writing a properly constructed and argued commentary on a given text.

  • Learn how to write an in-depth literary analysis and undertake a personal and critical investigation culminating in a personal interpretation.

Séminaire de littérature (Bloc 2); Séminaire de littérature française moderne et contemporaine (Bloc 3)

  • Gain basic knowledge and skills in philological publishing and genetic criticism of French literary works.

Séminaire de philologie française (Bloc 3)

• A command of the main linguistic schools and analytical tools and an understanding of the objectives, stakes and challenges of the discipline in its different aspects.

Students will:

  • Gain an overview of the discipline of linguistics, of its questions and fundamental objectives and challenges as well as its concepts and principal theoretical tools.

Linguistique générale (Bloc 1)

  • Gain the necessary linguistic knowledge and skills be able to undertake academic study of Romance languages.

Introduction aux études romanes (Bloc 1)

• Applied and practical theoretical skills in French grammar and linguistics.

Students will:

  • learn to systematically express and apply the standard rules of French spelling and prescriptive grammar by acquiring a command of its metalanguage and understanding the norms of grammar on a theoretical level.
  • learn to carry out a morphosyntactic and syntactic analysis of contemporary written and spoken French.

Exercices de grammaire du français moderne (Bloc 1); Linguistique synchronique du français I et II (Bloc 1 et 2)

  • learn the fundamental principles of corpus linguistics and how to produce a quantitative and qualitative analysis of a corpus.

Linguistique synchronique du français III (Bloc 3)

  • learn the specific features of the spoken language and how to collect and transcribe oral data.

Séminaire de linguistique synchronique du français (Bloc 2)

• An in-depth expertise in the history of the French language and its development from latin.

Students will:

  • acquire in-depth knowledge of the historico-political and socio-cultural events that have conditioned the emergence of French, its diffusion and development.

Histoire de la langue française (Bloc 1)

  • acquire in-depth knowledge and skills in phonetics and the historical morphology of French as well as acquire an ability to think critically about linguistic variation and the way in which language functions and evolves.

Linguistique historique du français I et II (Bloc 2 et 3)

  • learn to read and understand a medieval literary text in ancient or middle French and to translate it into modern French as well as identify its poetic and aesthetic characteristics.

Explication d’auteurs français du moyen âge I et II (Bloc 2 et 3)

  • acquire knowledge in comparative linguistics applied to Romance languages and be able to put the place and evolution of French and Spanish or Italian in Romania in perspective.

Linguistique romane (Bloc 3)

• Excellent communication skills and explicit metalinguistic and literary knowledge in a Romance language other than French.

By following the programme students will:

  • Acquire an excellent oral and written command of Spanish and/or Italian.
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge in the linguistics of Spanish and/or Italian (morphology, syntax, phonology and semantics).
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of the history of Spanish and/or Italian literature and culture and learn to analyse and comment on a Spanish and/or Italian literary text.

Espagnol I, II et III (Bloc 1, 2 et 3); Italien I, II et III (Bloc 1, 2 et 3); Histoire de la littérature espagnole (Bloc 3); Histoire de la littérature italienne (Bloc 3)

• Theoretical and practical skills in latin as well as an ability to apply these in understanding the evolution of Romance languages.

Students will:

  • Acquire a thorough command of the syntax, vocabulary and of the nominal and verbal morphology of classical Latin.
  • Develop their comprehension and translation skills in relation to a literary text in classical latin.
  • Learn to comment on a literary text written in classical latin (from the point of view of grammar, history, stylistic, aesthetic and culture). Students will also acquire an understanding of latin literary history and culture.

• The skills needed to conduct research in linguistics and literature.

Students will learn to:

  • Exploit the principal bibliographical reference tools used in the different disciplines of linguistics and literature;
  • Construct a research hypothesis and defend it using appropriate methodology in a piece of personal work;
  • Describe the current scholarly state of investigation in relation to a linguistics issue and produce a bibliography;
  • Demonstrate an ability to put into effect the instructions for a significant piece of work (including respecting deadlines) and an ability to discuss and interact; constructively with a supervisor.

III. To acquire a grounding in the scientific method (transferable skills)

At the end of the Programme students will have acquired:

• Critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills.

Students will learn to:

  • Carry out a piece of work according to the scientific method as well as learn to apply critical analytical skills to the study any type of information or document.
  • Construct clear and sophisticated reasoning, use appropriate terminology, put a question in its theoretical context, establish a hypothesis and verify it.
  • Analyse, synthesise and identify the objectives of and important ideas in any complex text or piece of reasoning.

• A grounding in the norms of scientific communication and in referencing and publication rules

Students will:

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the principles of argumentative writing.
  • Learn to write a piece of academic work in accordance with the norms and ethics of academic writing (bibliographical references, use of quotations, notes, etc.).
  • Develop a practical command of the different forms of academic communication for conveying a research finding (oral presentation, written dissertation, text analysis & commentary, review, etc.).

IV. To acquire a command of the French language (transferable skills)

At the end of the Programme students will have acquired:

• A full command of the French language in all its written and oral dimensions and the skills needed to comprehend and synthesise any type of French language text.

Students will:

  • Develop a command of the French language both in terms of comprehending and being able to produce oral and written texts.
  • Learn to comprehend and summarise any type of French language document.
