Contenu de l'activité :
This course consists of three components concerning content. The grammar builds on the grammatical structures covered in English 1. A problem-based approach will be used. Business, general and academic vocabulary will be enlarged. Specific topics from the financial and business world will be discussed.

The focus is mainly on the acquisition of an attitude of regular reading, also of scientific and socio-economic texts. A selection of texts and cases offers opportunities for language activities.

Academic Vocabulary in Use: units 1 - 17 and 29 - 50.

Activités d'apprentissages prévues et méthodes d'enseignement :
The course is definitely not a formal lecture. It consists of training sessions that focus on the improvement of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The subject matter is not so much "'matter" but rather a "starting point" or "extension" of language activity. Results are only achieved if students do their best, according to the principle: learning by doing ("leap before you look").

In class, mainly language activities are covered and articles from the best English dailies and weeklies are dealt with. A reading model will be offered, a starting point for the texts which students have to look for and process individually for the oral exam.

Grammar and academic vocabulary are acquired in the form of self-study. Good self-study is guaranteed by giving students exercises in group. In doing so, students will be stimulated to work on grammar and vocabulary and the acquisition of certain aspects of grammar and vocabulary can be checked.

Méthodes d'évaluation :
Type : Exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Oral, Written
Type of questions : Open questions, Closed questions
Learning material : None

1. Written exam (2/3 of the marks)
The written exam takes place in the regular exam period and consists of three sections.
a. Grammar. Students get a series of exercises which are similar to the ones practised in class or in self-study. Definitely only implicit knowledge (apply theory in exercises) is covered, no explicit knowledge (theoretical questions).
b. Vocabulary from Academic Vocabulary in Use and furthermore from texts and case studies dealt with in class. Questions take up the form of gap-filling exercises and exercises where students have to explain words in English.
c. Short writing task, related to a seen text or case study.

2. Oral exam (1/3 of the marks)
In the regular exam period, student and lecturer go through some of the articles read by the student. Besides questions about content also vocabulary will be assessed by means of questions such as: "Explain this phrase, sentence, ... from the article in English." Students also summarise the articles in 10 to 15 lines per article before they take the oral exam. More details (e.g. types of texts) will be given to the students at the beginning of the academic year.
Students who obtained 50% or more for the oral exam or the written exam do not have to retake it in the second exam session unless they explicitly ask for it. Students who obtained 50% or more for the oral exam or the written exam and retake the oral exam in the retake exam session keep that 50% or more if the result in the retake exam session is lower.

Students who do not take one of the two parts of the exam (written exam or oral exam) will get an 'NA' score (not taken part in the exam).

The evaluation methods during the first and second exam opportunities are identical.
