Objectifs d'apprentissage :
Graduates at the Faculty of Economics & Business will have to be communicatively active ánd skillful as working professionals. English has a unique position as an international language in that respect, and is an obvious object of study for students in an international programme. In this respect, it also serves an instrumental purpose that may result immediate effect in the students' educational context as all communication on, for and in their courses is in English.

English 1 aims to equip students with the linguistic tools necessary to perform adequately in an academic programme that is taught in English. Therefore, it especially focuses on writing skills, brushes up the students' grammar, and tackles topics that allow students to broaden their horizons and their knowledge of the English lexicon.

In this course, the following key objectives are (partially or fully) realized:
- Uses English to communicate orally and in writing with an audience of specialists and non-specialists, and such in a way that is correct on the level of grammar and vocabulary; uses a style that is common in a (business) economics context.
o Uses correct grammatical structures in exercises (written communication).
o Acquires frequent general and business economic vocabulary.
- Critically examines scientifically substantiated texts of (business) economic nature and interprets and synthesises them in English.
o Critically examines scientifically substantiated texts of (business) economic nature and synthesises them in English.
- Writes an essay.

Contenu de l'activité :
This course consists of four content components. Some grammar structures will be revised. Business vocabulary will be expanded with the help of the self-study textbook Business Vocabulary in Use. The texts and cases the lecturer brings along will provide a starting-point for many language activities, and will further enhance the students' knowledge of English vocabulary. Finally, much attention will be paid to the acquisition of writing skills in different genres.

Activités d'apprentissages prévues et méthodes d'enseignement :
The course is definitely not a formal lecture. It consists of training sessions focusing on the improvement of language skills in English (especially listening, reading and writing). The subject matter is not so much "matter" but rather a "starting point" or "extension" of language activity. Results are only be achieved if students do their best, according to the principle of learning by doing ("leap before you look").
In class, mainly language activities based on selected texts and case studies are covered and students receive a thorough training of their writing skills.

Grammar largely involves self-study of The Grammar Files, which is occasionally accompanied by exercises on particular problem areas in class.

Also the vocabulary from Business Vocabulary in Use means self-study.

There is a written exam in the regular exam period. It consists of five parts:
a. Grammar.

Students get a series of exercises such as gap-filling exercises, ... Definitely only implicit knowledge of grammar ("apply theory in exercises") is covered, no explicit knowledge ("theoretical questions").
b. Business vocabulary.
The vocabulary from Business Vocabulary in Use Intermediate is covered. Students can expect exercises where students have to explain words in English, have to provide the appropriate word, etc. Only the words in bold will be assessed.
c. Vocabulary from texts and case studies dealt with in class.
Questions may take on the form of inter alia gap-filling exercises and exercises where students have to explain words in English.
d. Reading comprehension.
The students need to answer some questions on an unseen text, which deal with word and text comprehension, text interpretation and critical reading.
e. Essay, related to a text covered in class.
