Learning outcomes :
The minimum level of Dutch to be reached at the end of the year is B2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The courses and homework will prepare the students to master the language in terms of vocabulary and grammatical structures. At the end of the course, the student should be able to grasp the general meaning of authentic texts and make a structured synthesis of them, while being able to explain passages dealing with important data in Dutch.

An exemption test (and not a level test) is organized at the beginning of the first term, at a precise moment (see Valves) at the end of September, to allow the strongest students to be exempted from the course. Please note that an overall mark of 16/20 must be obtained in order to be exempted from the course and that it is not possible to present this test at another moment.

Course contents :
Since the course focuses on developing the ability to understand authentic texts, news reports and film clips, the content is drawn from the Dutch-speaking media and deals with general topics as well as issues relating to the social, political and cultural organization of society. The student will therefore be required to develop all four skills (reading and listening comprehension; written and oral expression). The student will also read a Dutch work of fiction. All this material is also used as a basis for lexical extension, grammar revision, synthesis and conversation exercises in Dutch.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
Interactive course, based on:
- Current press, visual and audio recordings (VRT, Canvas, ...);
- Reading of the book Hoe ik talent voor het leven kreeg (edition Leeslicht);
- Individual oral presentation based on a relevant article of min. 1 A4 of your choice (permanent assessment which may count in favour of the student in the final assessment);
- Group presentation which counts in the final evaluation.

When a part of the teaching activities cannot be carried out in class due to sanitary reasons, the instructions will be sent via Moodle / Teams and the active participation of each student in these activities is expected. Any changes to this course plan (content, timetable, etc.) due to external circumstances will be communicated via Moodle.

It is imperative that students consult Moodle at least once a week and read ALL announcements.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
First and second term, 60 hours, 2 hours every week.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The assessment covers all material covered in the course and includes:
A) A written exam in Q1 taking place off-session on Monday, 12 December 2022; this covers the material of the first term. This part counts for 50% in the final weight.
B) An written and oral exam in Q2. This part also counts for 50% in the final weight:
- The written part takes place off-session on Monday, 15 May 2023, this part covers the material of the second term.
- The oral part takes place after Easter (dates to be defined). It consists of a group presentation. The modalities of this presentation are explained at the beginning of this syllabus (mondelinge groepsopdracht semester 2) and will be explained in class. Groups of 2 to 4 students must be formed by Friday, March 17, 2023 at the latest. NB: Oral presentations may be the subject of an exam question, as may individual presentations on a current topic.
The proportion for Q2 is 60% for the written exam and 40% for the oral presentation. It is mandatory to take both parts in May to obtain a grade in the first session.
As the course is interactive, it goes without saying that the evaluation also focuses on effective and regular participation: preparation of exercises proposed by the lecturer.
In case the student has not obtained the average (for the 2 parts) of 10/20 for his final quote, he/she is obliged to retake in August the part(s) for which he/she has not obtained 10/20.
Students who get 10/20 or higher will keep their result. The students will therefore not be able to re-sit their oral/written exam for which they have obtained a mark of 10/20 or higher.

If the sanitary conditions do not allow for face-to-face examinations, the modes of evaluation will be hybrid. The exams will also be organized off session. Any changes to the assessments, due to external circumstances, will be communicated via Moodle.

Please note that students are required to follow all information and instructions posted on Moodle. Nonobservance of instructions will result in failure with a 0 for the part(s) concerned.
