Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, students should be able to
- identify and describe the major literary movements of a specific period in the UK, Ireland and/or the US;
- contextualise and discuss in depth literary texts and the major authors belonging to that specific period;
- to produce a structured, well-argued discourse that integrates the specific vocabulary and concepts used in literary studies;
- to analyse a literary text using the knowledge acquired through the course.

Course contents :
This course combines a historical overview of literature with an initiation to the critical reading and literary analysis of texts.
The first part of this course gives an overview of English literature from the Restoration to the Victorian age, with a focus on the emergence of the novel in the 18th century.
The second part of this course offers an initiation to the basic terms and methods of literary analysis through the in-depth analysis of a selection of novels. Using as the main thread the notion of voice, it focuses on the various aspects of narration, focalisation and the modes of representation of a character's consciousness through the juxtaposition of “traditional” and experimental novels.
The students who have already followed one part of the course will be required to complete an alternative task (essay) for this part of the course.


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures. Students are encouraged to actively prepare and take part in the discussions through weekly compulsory reading tasks.
The lectures make ample use of audio-visual material and technologies (extracts from film adaptations or performances, interactive quizzes with voting devices, etc.).


Assessment methods and criteria :
25 minutes oral exam (with 25 minutes of preparation) covering the subject of the two parts of the EU.

If the pandemic risk evolves and returns to partial or total containment, the assessment of this EU may take the form of an oral exam on Teams.

This course includes 30 hours of workshops. These sessions are meant to help students become familiar with the texts and basic terms and methods thanks to activities in which the texts discussed in class are approached from a different angle, but also writing tasks and short presentations similar to the exam.
