FRAN1312 - French for beginner's level students

Learning outcomes :
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the French language.
At the end of the course, students will have acquired basic communication skills, both oral and written.
Course contents :
Throughout the sessions (2 hours per week) the student will learn to construct sentences for basic communication purposes: introduce himself or another person (establish a physical and/or psychological description, provide information on professional, personal and social life); talk about his feelings, his emotions, describe his country, his place of residence or his immediate environment, discuss his schedule; give the date and time and the weather conditions.
Students will be required to complete written communication exercises (such as write a postcard or an email requesting information, or place a small ad) as well as oral expression exercises simulating daily life situations: the student will learn to ask simple questions and to answer them, using the standard polite forms of address. He will also learn to use common phrases and expressions so as to meet practical needs.
By the end of this course, the student should be able to exchange simple sentences with someone speaking slowly and clearly, in order to provide or obtain information.
In regard to French grammar, students must be able to conjugate regular and irregular verbs in the different indicative tenses: present, present perfect, future simple. The student also has to be able to identify in a short simple text, the nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and the various forms of pronouns, to understand the use of interrogative adjectives and formulas used to compare two terms.

Interactive communicative lessons.
An active presence during this course - including the completion of requested communicative, written and oral tasks - is mandatory.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The assessment of the skills acquired by the student will take place at the end of the four-month period in the form of a written and oral examination.
The purpose of the oral exam is to assess the student's capacity to carry out simple communicative tasks (see above). Whereas the written exam is designed to assess the vocabulary and grammatical knowledge acquired. The student is also asked to write a short essay relaying a simple communicative objective.
