Introducing a historical dimension in life means taking a retrospective look at the human adventure, conducive to understanding the contemporary world and building the future. In a time when pragmatism tends to replace reflection, History studies develop an awareness of humanity’s long march in all its complexity. These studies also pave the way for a thorough understanding of culture in a broader sense.

From September 2022, the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Letters, and Human Sciences will offer a bilingual French/English bachelor's degree in history: a unique formula in the French-speaking Belgian university landscape.

Structure

By offering a university course that combines historical knowledge courses and a hands-on approach to a historian’s tasks, the Université Saint-Louis - Bruxelles offers a particularly comprehensive programme.

The University prepares students to the various aspects of a historian’s profession: introducing the range of information sources - from the first engravings to digital documents by way of manuscript texts - researching and classifying sources, critically analyzing testimonials, drawing up conclusions in line with the requirements of scientific writing.

The periods of history, from the dawn of mankind to the present time, are approached in a way to raise awareness of the various axes and scales of historical investigation, such as global history, thematic history, and memory-related history. Reinforced by general courses common to the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Letters and Human Sciences, History studies teach us to build bridges between generations and cultures - which all the more necessary as human and environmental stakes get more globalised.
