Learning outcomes :
Language
Learning Italian language in its social and cultural context and in a comparative and reflexive dimension.
By the end of this course, the student will be able to understand complex texts in Italian. S/he will be introduced to press articles and literary texts. S/he will be able to discuss and express opinions in Italian. The student will attain level B2 (CEFR).
THEORY
Learning Italian literature of the 20th century. At the end of this year, the student will have a basic knowledge of Italian literature and civilization of the 20th century, as well as an in-depth understanding of some contemporary authors who expressed across different genres (novel, theatre, poetry, essay and short stories).

Course contents :
The course is divided into two parts: Italian Language (30 hours in Semester 1 and 30 hours in Semester 2) and Theory (15 hours in Semester 2).


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
LANGUAGE :
Dr Ferrari is in charge of language courses. Classes are 2 hours per week (Semester 1 and Semester 2) and based on a hybrid methodology in which language teaching is combined with a cooperative and interactive learning in order to improve both the linguistic competence (grammar, vocabulary, syntax etc.) and productive ability (oral and written skills).
This course will allow to gain a better understanding of authentic written and oral texts as well as a varied set of cultural contents ranging from Italian literature, art and history to music.
Over the entirety of the course, students are expected to actively participate in lectures. The language of instruction is Italian.


Theory
Professor Nannicini is in charge of the Theory part. Lectures are 1 hour per week in Semester 2 and consist of frontal classes, delivered with the aid of Power Point, allowing however space for interaction and discussion. The languages of instruction are French and Italian.
Each class will be focused on an author. Individual study time will be devoted to preparatory reading with regard to the author who will be covered in the next class. By the end of the year, the student will have an understanding of the main literary movements and authors of the 20th century (manual), the historical and cultural events of the 20th century (booklet) as well as the authors studied over the course and by means of individual reading (course + bibliography). The language of instruction for this part is Italian

In the event that part of the teaching may be carried out remotely, students will receive their instructions by Moodle. Students' active participation in these activities is strongly required.
Any modification (contents, evaluation, schedule, and so forth) related to external circumstances (health situation, etc.) will be notified via Moodle


Assessment methods and criteria :
Semester 1: a two-hour and a half written examination in January.
Semester 2: a written examination, including the Language and Theory parts as well as an individual oral examination (Language plus Theory) in June.
Semester 1 result is exclusively based on the Language part, while in Semester 2 the final result is the average of both Language and Theory parts

- Booklet (syllabus) ‘Storia della civiltà italiana' by Chiara Nannicini (chapters 13-17) (available for sale at the reprography office of the university).
- The course PDF file, including the information on the authors studied this year, is available on eSaintLouis.
- The novels, the excerpts, the poems studied in class during the Semester.
- Furthermore, on the basis of the bibliography distributed at the beginning of Semester 1, each student is required to choose and study the work of one of the authors covered over the course.
