Learning outcomes :
The seminar is an opportunity for the students to address a coherent issue, to conduct a research using archives, to put together a bibliography, to make an oral presentation of their results and to write a synthesis essay (end of cycle work).

Course contents :
The professor in charge of the seminar will define its topic and propose a theme related to his research, guiding the students through printed and archive sources. In introduction, the theme, its framework and its different approaches are presented. Presentations of contextualisation, meetings with witnesses or site visits provide additional indications throughout the first term.


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The seminar is designed as a series of common work sessions. As the students have to work mostly outside the University, the professor will schedule duty hours during which he will guide and assist the students in their research.


Assessment methods and criteria :
Continuous evaluation based on the involvement of the students during the sessions, and most importantly on the end of year work. (oral presentation of the first results and of a written document).


Recommended or required reading :
The finalisation of the bibliography, starting from a lead provided by the professor, is an integral part of the students' work. The students will be invited to conduct some research in the Royal Library of Belgium, the Foreign Affairs Ministry Librairy and the Royal Museum of Central Africa.
