Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, the students should have acquired the fundamental knowledge of literary movements, periods, styles, works, etc. across Europe from antiquity to the twentieth century. He/she must also demonstrate summarisation and critical analysis capabilities that are essential in comparative literature in order to establish relations between these works and the great literary movements.

Course contents :
Following an introduction related to the comparative literature as a discipline, the course will take a historical journey through European literature and will be divided into two sections, spread out over two years (comparative literature I and II): the first section begins with the Jewish, Christian and Antique legacies and extends itself to the threshold of the baroque movement; the second section starts with classicism and runs through to the twentieth century, with a possible extension to contemporary literatures outside Europe.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The lecture is given by the professor, however the students are encouraged to take an active part in the course contents through the regular and preparatory reading of works and exerts commented during the sessions (included in the reading portfolio or acquired by the student). It is essential to read the main works studied during the course and also to diversify as much as possible your reading.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral examination that will include a question relative to the students' readings.

Recommended or required reading :
A bibliography containing all the main works mentioned during the course as well as the general works, is included in the reading portfolio.
