Learning outcomes :
The aim of the course is to pursue the introduction to the principles of market economy started in the Economics I course.

By the end of the course, the student should be able to understand basic economic theories, to use them in order to explain certain economic situations, to explain the intuition underlying simple economic charts and algebraic models and to solve exercises representing simplified economic realities.

Course contents :
The Economics II course will first pursue its micro-economic analysis of market economy through studying imperfect competition and market failures. The second part of the course will focus on the introduction to macroeconomics. The subjects that will be discussed are the calculation of national income and of the cost of living, macroeconomics in the long-term, the money market, and the analysis of macroeconomic policies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Ex cathedra presentations and exercises sessions.

The course consists of a lecture on theoretical developments accompanied by discussions and illustrations referring to the recent economic news. Also, the exercises sessions in small groups help to comprehend the models by combining practical exercises and analyses of economic reality based on press articles. An active participation of the students is necessary and requires the reading of their course notes beforehand.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Final assessment: a written exam is organised during the examination sessions. It lasts 3 hours and covers both theoretical and exercise questions.

Formative assessment: by answering the questions asked by the teacher during the lecture and by systematically solving the exercises in the handbook, the student will be able to assess his level of mastery and understanding of the studied subjects.

The course is based on the book of N.G Mankiw, Mark P. Taylor, Principes de l'économie, Adaptation européenne, De Boeck, 2nd edition 2011.
