At the end of the course, student will have acquired a basic knowledge of the foundations of the Medieval Philosophy.

Course contents :
- Study of the important events of medieval philosophy: Christian Neoplatonism (Saint Augustine, Boetius, Pseudo-Denys, Jean Scot Erigène); the quarrel of the universals (Pierre Abélard), the advent of universalism in the 12th and 13th centuries and controversies surrounding Aristotelianism (St. Thomas Aquinas and Siger of Brabant); Arab-Moslem philosophy (Avicenna and Averroës); the evolution of thought after the 1277 condemnations (Jean Duns Scot and William of Ockham).

- Study, centred on some crosscutting topics (humanism, the historical authenticity of knowledge, the infinity of the worlds, the question of love and of beauty, power and sovereignty, etc.), of the principal figures of philosophy up to the Renaissance.
