MHTU1211 - Turkish: Grammar in Practice I

Learning outcomes :
On completing this Course in grammar, students should be able (in the final exam) to:

- Perform a thorough and correct grammatical analysis of a sentence or text with a particular focus on the approach and terminology of ‘prescriptive Turkish grammar';
- Understand and explain the uses of the moods and tenses of verbs, perceive the differences in and the nuances of meaning that the latter repre-sent and spot the mistakes that their incorrect use causes;
- Be able to describe and systematically apply the rules of Turkish prescriptive grammar;
- Reflect on theoretical grammatical rules and their application.

• General introduction to Fossilized Forms
- Verbal nouns -me/ -mek / -i? (isim-fiiller = mastarlar)
- Relative verbal adjectives and participles (Sıfat-fiiller)
- Gerunds (Ba?-fiil / Ulaç)
• Complement clauses (Yan cümleler)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The theory of grammar is presented in a straightforward and progressive way and highlighted through examples and is followed by practical exercises. A contrastive ap-proach to grammar is taken as a methodological platform for translating, oral speech and written expression.
In view of the health context linked to the spread of the coronavirus, these teaching methods may be adapted in different situations; these possible new methods will be communicated by the teachers to the students via Moodle.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Written assessment comprising a range of question types (100% of the final mark).
