MHNE1351 - Dutch : Translation and Interpreting

Learning outcomes :
On completing this course, students should be able to demonstrate their ability to:

- Translate a moderately specialized text into well-written French (well-written in terms of spelling, grammar, style and lexicon) making effective use of the linguistic resources of the French language (collocations, idiomatic expressions, etc.);
- Identifier a text's function (inform, provide a response, engage a/in controversial debate, promote something, etc.) and the different components of the message it seeks to convey;
- Transfer this message in French respecting the author's intentions, as well as the style and register of the original text and avoiding errors of calque;
- Carry out a translation demonstrating that they have understood and analysed the Dutch language text in all its aspects;
- Evaluate the appropriateness of possible equivalent text, selecting the most appropriate through a process of ‘negotiation' with the text (ref. Umberto Eco);
- With discernment apply the translation techniques learnt in B1 in order to resolve the difficulties inherent in the source text and develop awareness of the nature of the translation process;
- Check the meaning of words through judicious use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries;
- Verify the correctness of their choices by making use of, where appropriate, and with due circumspection, the electronic resources provided by a range of internet sites.
- Manage and remobilize a set of information in a structured way in synthesis exercises.
- Give a consecutive interpretation of a presentation in Dutch lasting between 5 and 10 minutes and with an average degree of specialization into good quality French, making effective use of the linguistic resources of the French language (collocations, idiomatic expressions, etc.).

Course contents :
Translation C->A: a collection of feature articles (moderately specialist) generally from the press or cultural magazines, which students translate individually. 'Learning through sharing' and correction in the classroom. Introduction to interpreting: interpretation exercises using short texts in Dutch of intermediate level, on topics from the Flanders/Dutch news.
Summarizing: mostly written summarizing (in Dutch) moderately specialized texts taken from the Flanders/Dutch news.
Interpreting: Consecutive interpreting exercises with and without note-taking of presentations in Dutch pertaining to current affairs and general knowledge.

Face-to-face , second term, 60 hours of exercises.

If the health context requires it, the courses can be given at a distance.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Translation : written assessment in June. Translation into French of a moderately specialised text.
Introduction to interpreting: individual or group oral presentations.
Summarising: written assessment.
This module/course is subdivided into two parts (Translation and Interpretation) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described above. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second or third exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.
Weightings:
Translation: 50%; Interpretation : 50%.

The written tests, normally in face-to-face sessions, can be adapted into distance written tests if the health context requires it. This also applies to the consecutive interpretation tests that can be adapted into distance oral tests.
