On completing the language and civilisation component of the course (‘language and society') at B3 level, students should be able to demonstrate their ability to:
- Understand the culture of Flanders and the Netherlands by studying their major historical events;
- Enrich their knowledge of Flanders and the Netherlands by studying the events and people that have marked their history; identify and translate the prominent figures and events;
- Use appropriate vocabulary;
- Use full sentences and express themselves with fluency, ease and self-confidence;
- Respect the rules for morphology and syntax. On completing this course in translation from French into Dutch at B3 level, students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
- from among the translation strategies studied in class, choose the most apt for conveying the message in the foreign language and respecting the author's intentions.

Course contents :
Outline of the prominent moments in the history of the Netherlands and Flanders since the end of the Antiquity up to the nineteenth century, and their influence on culture and society.
Students are invited to express themselves through presentations, debates and casual conversations in class. Translation A->C: parallel reading to highlight translation strategies.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Exercises. Presentations. Comparative/contrastive reading activities.
Assessment methods and criteria :
'Culture' component : written exam in June and practical work. An oral exam for the ‘language' component.
The assessments include a variety of questions. Translation into Dutch : practical work on translation techniques drawing on a parallel reading exercise. The papers should be handed in at the beginning of May.
This module/course is subdivided into two parts (Culture and language / Translation) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described above/below. In case of a fail grade, you are invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second or third exam session. It is thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.
Depending on the health context, the exercises and assessments could be done face-to-face or online.
