Learning outcomes :
On completing this course « Grammar in Practice » at B2, students should be able to demonstrate their ability to:
- Analyse the use of syntactic techniques in unfamiliar texts and understand the role they play in structuring the message;
- Define, using examples, grammatical concepts related to sentence structure (simple and compound) in Dutch;
- Apply grammatical structures in context (syntax);
- Compare the different options possible in a given context (sentence, text) and deduce their importance for the meaning of the message;
- Identify the linguistic features in order to successfully determine the geographic origin of the text (Flanders, the Netherlands). On completing this course in translation from French into Dutch at B2 level, students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
- from among the translation strategies studied in class, choose the most apt for conveying the message in the foreign language and respecting the author's intentions.

Course contents :
Grammar : In-depth analysis analyse (descriptive and normative) of Dutch sentence structure (simple and compound sentences), with a detailed focus on each constituent part of the sentence (what may/may not be there, order of complements within a given constituent part, rules for moving them from one part to another, etc.). The course will be devoted to the parts of the sentence in Dutch called “verbale rest” and “derde stuk”, to the structure of the sub-clause and to all sorts of deviant constructions.
Translation A->C: parallel reading to highlight translation strategies.




Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Learning by resolving problems.
Exercises (practical work, guided study, simulation, etc.).
Translation from French into Dutch : Exercises.
Comparative/contrastive reading activities.


Assessment methods and criteria :
Grammar. Summative written assessments in June, comprising a variety of questions on specific difficulties in Dutch syntax. This written exam, normally face-to-face, can be adapted into a distance written test if the health context requires it.

If the green, yellow or orange codes apply :
Written exam in person (if a room is available) or remotely if not. Students are not allowed to consult their syllabus in case of a face-to-face exam. However, this authorization is granted to them in case of a distance exam.


If code red is applicable :
Written exam at a distance. Students are authorized to consult their syllabus.


Translation into Dutch : practical work on translation techniques drawing on a parallel reading exercise. The papers should be handed by the end of April. The written tests, normally in face-to-face sessions, can be adapted into distance written tests if the health context requires it.
This module/course is subdivided into two parts (Grammar and Translation) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described above. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second or third exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.
