Learning outcomes :
At the end of this Course (via end-of-course written and oral exams) students should be able to: • Gain a broad general knowledge • Learn about the spanish culture in all its historical, political, economic and artistic aspects
With respect to writing:
• Chronologically situate the most significant processes in the history of Spain, from romanisation to 1900; analyse them accurately and describe them, using discipline-specific terminology
• Understand the international dimension of the country in the past through the prism of the principal cultural influences and identify their manifestations in the present
• Understand the underlying social and cultural components either in a writtten or oral document With respect to the translation part: • Translate texts on similar topics and of comparable length and difficulty level as the ones seen during the course, using methodologies and techniques taught and using the documentary and terminological tools available on the web. • develop cognitive strategies (search of appropriate parallel texts) and metacognitive ones (describing the process of transaltion without focussing only on the result) • Confront one's opinion to the one of others students in order to develop a critical view on one's translation
With respect to speaking (level B2-C1):
• Give and defend in the C language (spanish) an opinion drawing on relevant information, explanations and arguments
• Identify and understand a series of cultural aspects inherent in the Spanish language
• Be able to make convincing arguments and negotiate in the C language (spanish) in applying for a job or in different situations relating to the translation professional world

Course contents :
30 h lecturing class and 30h practical exercises (translation from french into spanish and oral expression class) • The political and cultural history of Spain from romanisation to 1900.
• Lectures wholly in Spanish accompanied by videographic documents (Memoria de España, a documentary series and TVE supervised by F. García de Cortázar.) • Translation of general texts on development, individual an universal rights, NGO's publications, refugees, degrowth and on a critical analysis of globalization
• Practise with the different language functions in order to develop presentational and argumentative skills.
• The oral part of the course focusses on Spanish news and culture.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The methodology combines: •lectures in Spanish using videographic documents and exercises (applied practical work, guided study/work, simulation, debates, etc.). •Practical exercises of translation (guided work in class and preparation at home)
•For the oral part of the course, practising the language functions in simulated debates, roundtable and presentations on the following topics : spanish news and culture

Assessment methods and criteria :
Exam in three parts: history, translation (2) and oral expression accounting for 50%, 25% and 25% of the global mark. (2) Translation of a text of 500 words/2h, first half without dictionary and the rest with full access to Internet.

This course is subdivided into two parts (part Culture and part Communication) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described above/below. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second or third exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.
