MHCH1371 - Chinese : Translation and Interpreting

Learning outcomes :
Translation: the learner must be able to translate Chinese texts into French, respecting not only its exact meaning but also the language register, the tone and the intention of the author. The level of difficulty is “middle” taking into account that the learners have just followed a program of exchange which immersed them in the Chinese language.

The learner must be able to perform a liaison interpretation (consecutive) from Chinese to French and from French to Chinese. The level of difficulty is “middle” and is supposed to prepare the learner for this type of mission in a commercial and political context. This course is not intended to teach simultaneous interpreting (conference interpreting).

Course contents :
Translation: translating texts concerning news in general and Chinese or Asian news in particular.

Interpreting: interpreting speeches in the framework of missions in China or hosting Chinese missions in Europe, trade negotiations etc. Most of the speeches that will be used come from effective Belgian missions in China or Chinese missions in Europe.


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Practical work in class and at home: for translation, the learner reads a text in class and translates it. His proposals are compared to those of his classmates and commented by the teacher. Other texts are to be prepared at home, which leaves the learner more time and resources to translate. The version is then, as for the previous exercise, compared and commented by the teacher.
For liaison interpretation, the learner will be introduced to note-taking skills and consecutive interpreting in the professional context of the accompaniment of commercial-economic or diplomatic missions. He will first listen to a speech in Chinese, translate it into French, then listen to the answer in French and translate it into Chinese (orally).


Assessment methods and criteria :
For the translation: a written test (text to translate from Chinese to French) of three hours. The use of dictionaries and lecture notes is allowed, however the use of computers, mobile phones, tablets or any other tool to communicate with a third person is prohibited.

For the interpreting: a practical exercise (10 minutes) on a comparable content (but different) from what was seen in class.

This course is subdivided into two parts (Translation 50% and Introduction to Interpretation 50%) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described above (50% Translation + 50% Introduction to interpretation. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.


Recommended or required reading :
This course must be considered as practical work, participation (it's more than presence) is strongly recommended. The reading of books dealing with translation studies cannot replace the practice and corrections that have been experimented during the class.
