On completing this Course students should:
- carry out simple documentary research ;
- type text with a certain ease and speed;
- use the Microsoft Office suite for their translation activities;
- use Windows to archive documents ;
- create and manage PDF files;
- use the standard functionalities of the MemoQ CAT tool;
- have a full command of the basic concepts in translation, correction and proofreading, in machine translation, in post-editing and in terminology;
- understand the different professions in the field of translation;
- be able to explain and/or compare the quality criteria for translation and translation skill proposed by different authors;
- be able to explain the profile, the interest, and the professional loyalty of the different organisations and people that make up the translation profession;
- have a full theoretical command of the three phases of the translation process with a view to applying them in their translation activities.

MHCG1261A - New Technologies:
A ‘practical' introduction to new technologies:
This Learning Activity includes an introduction to the basic theory and concepts of information technology and the terminology used in the field. After a presentation by the course tutor of a range of software, students perform a series of individual PC-based exercises related to translation activities.

MHCG1261B - Encyclopedia of Translation:
An introduction to the field of professional translation (its objectives, nature, challenges, forms, and the people who do it). Analysis of the three phases of the translation process (pre-translation, transfer, post-translation).
An introduction to translation support tools and machine translation.
An introduction to terminology.

MHCG1261B - Encyclopedia of Translation:
Second term, 30 hours, lectures; Course Readings.

We may have to switch to remote teaching methods, depending on how the COVID-19 situation evolves.

This module is subdivided into two parts (part New Technologies and part Encyclopedia of Translation) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described below. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.

MHCG1261A - New Technologies: (40% of the final mark given to the course unit)
If the green, yellow or orange codes apply: written examination with open questions and PC-based exercices, in the computer rooms used for the courses. Students who do not have their own login and password will not be allowed to take the exam.
If the red code applies: a two-hour online written exam, with open questions and exercises to be completed on the computer. Students will not be allowed to use their course notes.

MHCG1261B - Encyclopedia of Translation: (60% of the final mark given to the course unit)
Written exam. The assessment relates to students' integration and understanding of the theoretical concepts studied during the course.
If the green, yellow or orange codes apply: two-hour face-to-face written test; open questions. Students will not be allowed to use their course notes.
If the red code applies: one-hour distance written test; open questions. Students will not be allowed to use their course notes.

Students resitting the exam for this course in 2020-21 will be assessed on the course material of the current year, i.e. 2020-21.

A programme handout as well as several exercice maps are made available progressively on the Moodle of the course. The PowerPoint presentation will not be delivered to the students.

MHCG1261B - Encyclopedia of Translation:
The PowerPoint presentation for the course is made available online progressively. The Course Readings are also made available. The articles in the Readings are selected with the goal of providing students with more in-depth discussion on a number of theories and concepts studied during the course.
