MHAR1371 - Arabic : Translation and Interpreting

Learning outcomes :
1. Translation
The student learns to translate documents of a socio-politico-economic or technical-scientific nature and an upper intermediate level into correct French. This is preparatory to the Master's programme in which translations progressively become increasingly specialised and increasingly complex. The student is encouraged to widen and deepen their general knowledge to the fullest possible extent.
The student is encouraged to develop a critical approach to the Arabic-language original; to highlight common errors at their level of French (agreement of tenses, grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, etc.) as well as translation errors proper (syntax, sentence structure, undertranslation, inversion of meaning, changes of meaning, loss of meaning, omissions). The student is able to justify the words they have selected and to give a coherent explanation of their translation choices.

2. Interpreting
Developing skills thanks to which the student will be able to interpret
from Modern Standard Arabic to French audio-sequences dealing with miscellaneous issues
taken, in particular, from the today Arabic medias.

Course contents :
1. Translation
Recent texts from the Arabic-language press, about 220 words in length. A range of subjects are touched upon, in particular relating to economics, politics, social life, etc., as well as technical subjects (new technologies, etc.). The aim is to present the student with a large range of subjects in order to extend their vocabulary to the fullest possible.

2. Interpreting
Audio-files taken from the press but also sequences of coverages, documentaries and a few stories taken from the oral Arabic literature.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
1. Translation
Interactive method. Group work. A text taken from the news press is presented to the students. Various topics are covered, relating to science, politics, economics, society, etc. The text is read out and discussed to determine the degree of comprehension. Translation dictionaries and choice of words are discussed. Each student translates one sentence on sight. Group discussion. Once the text has been translated, the student writes out the translation of the text studied and hands it in to the instructor for correction and comment.

2. Interpreting
1) Listening to the audio-files
2) Identification of the affected topics
3) Interpreting as faithfully as possible the content of each sequence.


Assessment methods and criteria :
This course is subdivided into two parts (Translation 50% and Introduction to Interpretation 50%) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described above (50% Translation + 50% Introduction to interpretation. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.



1. Translation
Formative assessment to track student progress. This enables students to gauge their level and see how they have improved. These evaluations enable the instructor to determine the student's level and if need be correct issues arising. Continuous assessment throughout the semester. An assessment moment towards the last week of classes before the Easter accounts for 30% of the final mark. The exam during the examination period accounts for 70%.
