Specific Target Learning Outcomes
On completing this Year 1 Course students should be able to demonstrate their ability to:
- Employ (in writing) the disciplinary/thematic vocabulary studied during the course;
- Correctly apply lexical rules (spelling, gender and plural forms of nouns, word building, thematic fields);
- Understand general German language texts;
- Identify the structure of a text (logical connections, references, lexical fields);
- Identify types of texts, their principal functions, their target public and their specific linguistic and cultural characteristics so as to be able to translate them;
- Respond in French or in German to open or closed type questions on general German language texts;
- Summarise a German text in French, either in oral or in written form;
- Perform targeted documentary research to improve their understanding of a text and/or to translate it;
- Translate passages from German source texts into French taking into account cultural references, any specific linguistic characteristics, the target audience, etc. with or without tools.

Course contents :
The course requires students to build up their vocabulary using a thematic approach. Q 1 updates student's lexical knowledge, with Q 2 focusing in widening students' lexical repertoire. Students are given a range of German language texts that they study - in depth - both with regard to form and content with a view to translating them into French. In parallel and in a supportive complementary manner, similar themes are studied during the classes that are devoted to: lexicology, text analysis and introduction to translation.

Individual preparations to the course online. Face-to-face teaching. Active participation highly recommended and will be included in the final mark (20% of the final mark).

Assessment methods and criteria :
- Q 1 (30 %) :
Formative assessment + written examination.
This course is subdivided into two parts (lexicology and text analysis).
The certificative asessment of this course consists of a single exam. It is therefore not possible to transfer any part of the grade.
- Q 2 (70 %) :
Formative assessment + written exam, both forms of assessment include, inter alia, translation-related tasks.
