Course contents :
Each student is requested to address a specific aspect of a shared theme relating to the history of the Modern Times, selected more specifically in the history of the ancient Southern Netherlands of the sixteenth to eighteenth century. The theme and the sources on which the research is based vary from year to year, and are related to the different fields of the Modern Times.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Communal and directed definition of the subject; bibliographical research and state of the question; practical (and supervised) initiation to palaeography and diplomacy; introduction to the critical edition of manuscript sources; analysis of documents; communal sessions during which we will discuss the method, specific problems and results.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The final written work will include, in addition to an analysis and a bibliography, a critical edition of sources, appended to the work. The assessment also takes into account the oral presentation of the research results (mid-term).

Recommended or required reading :
The finalisation of the bibliography, starting from a lead provided by the professor, is an integral part of the students' work. The students will be invited to conduct some research in the Royal Library of Belgium and archival holdings.
