Learning outcomes :
AA : English : Linguistics II:The course this year will focus on two main components:
- A linguistic analysis of the language used to describe coronavirus,
- A module about Second Language Acquisition.
The objectives are twofold: (1) guide students in how to carry out a study in English linguistics and (2) introduce them to the field of Second Language Acquisition.

AA : English : Practical exercices
In addition to the theoretical course, students will follow 15h of practical exercises which aim to develop their English proficiency. By the end of the exercise sessions, students are expected to have reached level B2+ (in speech and writing) on the Common European Framework of Reference.

Course contents :
AA : English: Linguistics II

- Project-based learning: students are called upon to work in groups on a linguistic analysis of the language used to describe coronavirus.
- Students are required to read a number of scientific papers about Second Language Acquisition and write an accessible summary of each of these.

AA : English : Practical exercises
The exercise sessions will tackle the four language skills (speech, writing, reading, listening). Teacher-led sessions will emphasise productive skills (speech and writing) via a variety of activities: pronunciation exercises using up-to-date technologies, oral debates on current affairs, writing exercises linked to the topics tackled in the sessions. Students are required to engage in weekly skills-based tasks to train their English proficiency.
In addition, students will continue to study the Oxford Word Skills Advanced (Oxford University Press) vocabulary book (see GERM1240A).


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
AA : English : Linguistics II
The course is based on the scientific work produced by the students who will be guided by the teacher.
AA : English: Exercise sessions
. Students will do a variety of activities in the teacher-led sessions (phonetics, oral debates, writing exercises, etc) and will combine this with weekly online tasks to be done individually or in groups (pronunciation, reading and listening). Formative tests will be organised during the term to assess learners with respect to the different language skills.



Assessment methods and criteria :
AA : English: Linguistics II

Assessment of two tasks:
- Assessment of the coronavirus linguistic project.
- Assessment of one accessible summary.


AA : English: Exercise sessions
Formative testing during the term - this is for the students' information.
Written exam in June (PC exam if COVID interferes).

Weighting theory/exercises: 60% theory/40% exercises
