FILO1111 - The Philosophical Method

Learning outcomes :
This course aims at introducing the students to the philosophical investigation on the one hand, to the learning of the philosophical writing on the other hand.

Course contents :
This course will switch between two big parts, which correspond to the two big objectives. On the one hand, we'll see how to select a theme of investigation, how to distinguish a philosophical text from a no philosophical text, how to choose a good translation, how to read, how to elaborate a bibliography… On the other hand, we'll see how to write a dissertation: we'll insist on the importance of defining terms and spotlighting problems. We'll learn to argue, to illustrate one's ideas using examples, to faithfully transpose authors' theses…

Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation will focus on the students' capacity to conduct a research about an author/a theme firstly, to redact a philosophical dissertation secondly.
