Learning outcomes :
This course aims to better understand the "cultural identity" of the inhabitants of Flanders and the Netherlands through the diachronic and synchronic analysis of certain fundamental values that characterize these nations: language, dominant political and religious ideologies as well as their transmission, and finally artistic expressions with particular attention to paintings.

Course contents :
The course is divided into three parts, preceded by a theoretical introduction on the notion of "cultural identity". The first part analyzes the values and norms of the civilization of the Dutch-speaking countries through its artistic works. The second part considers Flemish identity and is analyzed from the standpoint of its 'Vlaamse Beweging' movement and the fundamental place played by linguistic recognition, first as a cultural value and later as an identity value widely shared by a popular mass. As this section also deals with the various reforms of the State, it allows to study the political organization of the country. The third part focuses on the Netherlands as a breeding ground for cultural tolerance but also as the country of Geert Wilders and his PVV political party.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Ex cathedra lectures based on concrete cases and on numerous exchanges between professor and students.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral exam on the course content (70%) and on personal readings from the press in Flanders and the Netherlands (reading portfolio containing 2 X 15 recent articles - 30%).
