Learning outcomes :
By the end of the course, the student should be able to
- Distinguish between the major ideological, aesthetic and literary trends in a social and political context for the period running from 1830 till the end of the 20th century in the Netherlands and Flanders;
- To read closely and critically and locate major literary texts, heir authors and other prominent literary figures within these currents;
- Write an essay on literary texts in a comparative approach, in strict compliance with the applicable criteria of scientific writing;
- submit literary texts to critical analysis following various methodologies and theoretical approaches.

Course contents :
This course focuses - in a Western and more specifically European perspective - on a detailed overview of the major ideological, aesthetic and literary currents that determined Dutch language literature and its prominent figures and canonical texts.

The student will also be trained in the main theoretical and methodological tools for in-depth analysis of the literary text and its relations with other arts and media. The texts cover the entire history of Dutch literature and are chosen according to their canonical status and/or because of the innovation they introduced. Priority is given to different disciplinary approaches and their combinations: narratology; post-classical narratology; psychoanalysis; post-structuralism, imagology; discourse analysis; ethical, (post) colonial, feminist readings; ...


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
On the one hand, ex cathedra lecture completed by readings that are commented and discussed in class. On the other hand, starting from on case studies and discussions between professor and students, the course aims to introduce students to the major theoretical and methodological tools of scientific analysis of Dutch literary texts. Students are asked to respond in a way that is both creative and critical to readings of texts belonging to different genres.

1/ Oral exam on the course content : (Q1 +) Q2 (60%)
2/ Oral discussion, preferably from a document (2 pages max.): an argued hypothesis (logical links + bibliography with secondary literature) on ONE aspect of a work chosen personally and not addressed in the course. Delivery of this document is ON THE LATEST ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BLOCUS. The document is not compulsory but strongly advised. In the absence of such a document, the oral exam will take place on the basis of information provided by the student at the time. The Q2 tutoring test can be used as a basis for the second part of the examination. (40%)

Final note : average Q1 + Q2.

Other information :
The course includes 15 hours of tutoring. The tutoring focuses on the most complex texts that will be analysed. The sessions are used to check the understanding and mastery of the vocabulary. They also provide the first elements of analysis of the texts that will be studied further with the professor.

Several hours are devoted to the methodology of scientific research as it is practiced in Dutch literature and to the accompaniment of students in the writing of two scientific essays (one essay per semester), in particular the validation of the corpus and help with writing (documentary research, structuring, argumentation, ...).
