Course contents :
Introduction to critical reading of multiple aspects of the literary phenomenon, more specifically poetry, prose and the dramatic genre. The student will be trained in the main theoretical and methodological tools for in-depth analysis of the literary text and its relations with other arts and media. The texts cover the entire history of Dutch literature and are chosen based on their canonical status and / or because of the innovation they convene. Priority is given to different disciplinary approaches and their combinations: narratology; post-classical narratology; psychoanalysis; post-structuralism, imagology; discourse analysis; ethical, (post) colonial, feminist readings; ...

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Based on case studies and through exchanges between professor and students, the course aims to introduce students to the major theoretical and methodological tools of scientific analysis of Dutch literary texts. Starting from an ex cathedra introduction, students are asked to respond in a way that is both creative and critical to readings of texts belonging to different genres.
The course also includes the writing of an essay to familiarise student with the applicable criteria of scientific writing. The student is entitled to submit a first draft to the professor. The draft will then be reworked on the basis of the professor's remarks.
The literature courses are biennial and include students from BAC I and II. The two consecutive years are therefore complementary.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Formative assessment:
The assessment is made through the discussions in class, the various drafts of scientific work submitted during the year and a dispensational exam in January.

Summative assessment:
Oral examination at the end of the year and final version of the essay. The expectations are higher for the students in second year than for those in first year.
