Learning outcomes :
The course provides students with a statistical overview of three policy areas of the EU that are close to the concerns of citizens, namely, the environment, consumer protection, and health.

Course contents :
The course aims to highlight the constitutional foundations of, as well as the interactions between, these Community/EU policies. The course examines the tension between, on the one hand, national sovereignty, and on the other, Community/EU harmonisation, especially in regard to the internal market.

To illustrate these themes, current issues such as REACH, climate change, tobacco regulation, free movement of patients will be covered.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Ex cathedra presentations.

For each policy, the lectures will focus on the following features:
- legal basis in the Treaty;
- soft law documents;
- hard law (regulations, directives);
- case-law from the ECJ.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination (dissertation).
