Learning outcomes :
The objective is to help students acquire the principal concepts and analytical processes used in semiotics. More generally, it intends to develop their reflexive capacities regarding « signs » and « representation » in general.

Course contents :

In the first place, this course intends to present the fundamentals of the two principal theoretical trends in semiotics: the “Saussurean” trend (Ferdinand de Saussure, Roland Barthes) and the “Peircean” trend (Charles S. Peirce, Umberto Eco). In the second place, it offers an introduction to the semiotics of television as it is envisaged by François Jost.



Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course is composed of lectures during which an interaction with the students is required. Multiple examples will be shown.

Written examination.


Recommended or required reading :
Fundamental references are given in class. In francophone areas, Philippe Verhaegen's book, « Signe et communication » (published by De Boeck), has the benefit of offering an overview of the most important schools in the field.
