Languages

The study of foreign languages in the BA in Law consists of:

  • In 1st year: students choose between a course of everyday Dutch or everyday English. To determine the student’s language level, a test is carried out during the first week of the academic year. It consists of a translation exercise and the summarisation of a text. Students who score 16/20 on this test have satisfied the language requirement and are exempted from following a language course. The grade obtained will be added to the student’s marks for the year during the academic jury review in June.
  • In 2nd year: students follow a course of Foreign legal terminologies in second language (Dutch or English) and readings of legal texts in third language (Dutch or English). A test is carried out during the first week of the academic year. Students who score 16/20 on this test have satisfied the language requirement and are exempted from following the part "Reading of Dutch legal texts" or "Reading of English legal texts" depending of their choice in 1st year.
  • In 3rd year, the list of optional courses includes a course taught in English: EU politics
