Learning outcomes :
The unit has two components: "written communication" and "oral communication". 1. Written communication : on completing this Course students should be able to demonstrate their ability to:
- Write a summary respecting the norms of quality and style that apply to the written word (spelling, vocabulary, syntax, distinction between language registers, arranging/sequencing information and page layout);
- Reformulate a paragraph taken from a news article;
- Use syntax analysis tools developed in class to analyse the French sentence in all its diversity;
- Demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of the history of the French language;
- Correctly define and employ in their personal writing the words and idiomatic expressions studied during the course.
2. Oral communication : on completing this Course (via a piece of work presented and submitted during the final two sessions of the course, see Assessment Methods below) students should be able to:
- conduct an interview (recorded and/or filmed) of a professional (student choice), applying the techniques studied during the course (oral fluency, types of questions, sequencing of content, etc.);
- prepare an oral introduction (sound only and/or film) of around two minutes, to two important extracts from the overall interview, correctly executing the key parameters studied during the course (intonation, delivery, volume, management of space, arrangement of speech, etc.)

Course contents :
1. Written communication : this course develops students' proficiency in written French (in its lexical, syntactic and spelling aspects) and hones their summarising skills.
The course places a particular emphasis on syntactic analysis as well as on enriching students' vocabulary (idiomatic expressions, paronyms, history of the language, regionalisms, borrowing, etc.). These two objectives are integrated in text summarising exercises as well as in exercises focusing on style (paraphrasing, rewriting incorrect sentences, etc.).

Oral communication : this Course, which alternates presentations of theory and numerous exercises, enables students to review and practice, the range of different non-speech, speech and physical language cues, such as the voice (intonation, delivery, pauses, intensity, emphatic stress, articulation, etc.), occupation of space, distance, gestural language, eye-contact, the construction of an oral presentation, etc.
The Unit also considers more specific skills such as: time management and turn taking; reformulation; group work/interaction, etc.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
1. Written communication : demonstration, case studies (integrated learning tasks), exercises, lectures.
2. Oral communication : demonstration, observation of a range of situations (recorded, filmed or suggested by students), practical exercises (role play, mimes, lectures, etc.), group work.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Continuous assessment. The assessment of the written communication represents 65% of the total grade (first quadrimester : 15%, second semester: 50%) and the oral communication assessment accounts for 35% of total score. 1. Written Communication : several written tests will be proposed (summarising tasks, including synthesis, paraphrasing, questions on the vocabulary studied during the course and on the history of the French language). Evaluation criteria: grammatical and usage spelling ; relevance and consistency of content ; use of a supported lexicon and a correct syntax; application and mastery of the facts, concepts, techniques and criteria covered in the course; organization of information and page, etc.
2. Oral Communication : the assessment involves the presentation of a piece of coursework: students are required to conduct an interview of a person in the exercise of their profession. The interview is recorded and must focus on the practice of profession concerned. The student is free to choose the person that they interview, but should choose someone who is not too close to them. The task for the student is to submit an audio recording (CD or DVD) on which they include a significant extract from the interview (of around two minutes in duration) and a personal oral presentation on the interview (approx. 1'30). The work is carried out before class and presented to a small group of students during the final two sessions of the year. This coursework is assessed according to the following criteria: fluency, arrangement of the introduction, interest of the content and choice of extracts, application of and proficiency in the techniques and parameters studied during the course.
